What is a Rack?

A rack is in most cases a secure storage cabinet. Commonly they are made from metal for extra strength and security. However some modern day racks are being made from wood for aesthetic reasons, particularly for recording studios, lecture theatres and conferencing centres.

Racks usually have two strips one down either side of the unit, these are used to screw in devices such as microphone receivers, effect control units, amplifiers, dvd players, computers or computer network patch panels. Allowing permanent fixings if required.

Some racks have transparent doors (so remote controls work through them!), some have solid metal doors and particularly in music studios no doors at all. In the these cases the racking units are used to angle certain equipment to make them more accessible for the day to day user.

What is the measurement of a rack?

Racks are measured in one rack unit or (U). They commonly are 4.445cm or 1.75 inch high. The 19" racks that we list on here is commonly used in the av, computer or telephony markets and are measured 19" or 48.26cmin width. The actual total height of the rack unit is measured in (u) and they range from 6u high to 25u.

Racks are sometimes referred to as multimedia racks, computer racks, storage racks, av rack, telecommunications rack or network racks.
