What is a lectern?

The term Lectern is derived from the latin "Lectus" which means to read. Lecterns are a reading desk with an angled top shelf to place your notes to refer from. Lecterns come in many shapes and sizes from portable desktop lecterns or solid fixed lecterns to height adjustable lecterns.

Traditionally lecterns are made from solid wood or marble commonly found in large auditoriums, lecture theatres or conference centres. In some cases these are carved into specific items such as the eagle in some churches and organisations. However more modern day lecterns are also produced from metal, acrylic, glass and plastic.

Modern day Lecterns also aid the presenter, trainer or speaker by providing audio and visual aids to further advance the message. Some are supplied with microphones, swan neck lamps and further shelves for projectors, amplifiers or laptops. Some lecterns also have facilities to safely lock up and store away valuable items in conference centres when not in use.

In education and conference centres further controls can be incorporated into the lectern such as lighting controls, timers and control systems for other electronic items. All injecting more confidence into the person stood behind the lectern desk.
